Or if you've got something against Dionne Warwick, choose your own song with "friend" in the title. Two of my friends, anyway, have gigs in the Merrimack Valley in the next week and it's my duty to shill for them. That's what blogs are for.
Ben Adelman is a guitarist and singer in the fine North Shore "Rock & Fiddle" band Down Dog, which offers both Irish trad stuff and its own take on rock. They're playing at the West Newbury bandstand tonight at 6:30 and Market Landing Park in downtown Newburyport, a beautiful setting right by the water, tomorrow night from 6-7:30 or so. Step-dancing is threatened in Newburyport; let's hope Ben also breaks out one of his patented
Warren Zevon covers. And it's all free. Just hope the rain holds off.
Bruce Ferrara is a fine jazz guitarist who leads the Factory Jazz Project series at the Essex Art Center in Lawrence. Next Thursday (July 14), according to his email, guitarist Mark Lucas is coming up from Pittsburgh to join the festivities. Beginning at 7 p.m., Lucas will play a solo acoustic set and then join Ferrarra's double trio - two drummers, two bassists, two guitarists. If the weather's nice, they'll be on the outside stage at 60 Island St., otherwise inside at the same address. If memory serves, there's a small suggested donation that will be well worth it. (Directions.)
If you go, tell 'em I sent ya.
