Probably the biggest arts story in either paper today is the news that WCRB (FM 102.5) will be sold for perhaps $90 million, pretty much ensuring that the buyer will ditch the station's classical music format. In the Globe, Chris Reidy reports that Charles River Broadcasting won't identify the buyer, but that a good bet might be one of four chains that already owns multiple stations in Boston, like Clear Channel or Entercom. She also says there's some weirdness surrounding a trust created by former station owner the late Ted Jones, which station officials dismiss. In the Herald, Greg Gatlin reports that board member Herb McCord confirmed the identity of the four bidders, but Gatlin rules out Entercom and CBS/Infinity, leaving Clear Channel and Greater Media in the running. Gatlin also notes that McCord once ran Greater Media. Both papers say a new owner could put a new format on FM and keep classical airing on a digital channel. And they note that not many people are now set up for digital radio.
