It's time for Tanglewood

The Boston Symphony Orchestra said late today that tickets for this summer's Tanglewood season go on sale to the public on  Sunday. Sales begin at 8 a.m. at www.bso.org and at 10 a.m. at SymphonyCharge, 888-266-1200. The season begins July 7 with Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 conducted by BSO Music Director James Levine.

MFA gets podded

On Feb. 13 the Museum of Fine Arts will enliven the first-floor "Hemicycle" (near the Lane Gallery of Modern Art) with "Light My Fire: Rock Posters from the Summer of Love," a display of more than two dozen psychedelic rock posters from 1966 and '67, on view through Aug. 13. The posters by artist Victor Moscoso and others are from a collection recently donated to the museum, and the venue will be retrofitted with colored lights and a hanging Les Paul. On a more contemporary note, the MFA has assembled an iTunes playlist of suggested tracks by the Airplane, the Dead, the Doors for listening to on your  iPod while you look at posters for the bands. Although it's hard to argue the significance of the graphic art of the era, it's not clear if this exhibit will pass muster with those who found fault with displays of "Guitars" and "Ralph Lauren's Cool Rides." (Do the special effects help or hinder appreciation of the art itself? Discuss among yourselves.) Perhaps if Malcolm Rogers dons love beads and tie-dye...

Revels celebration

A Revels gala, "Sun Enchanted Evening," is set for March 11 at Ballroom Veronique, celebrating the 35th anniversary of the organization and the vision of founder John Langstaff, who died in December. Country roads lead to Tanglewood

James Taylor's wildly popular annual Tanglewood appearance is booked for Aug. 21 this year - Only one night? He did two last year - and tix go on sale March 17 via Ticketmaster or www.bso.org. Shed seats are $55-$79, lawn $23. Tickets for the annual Tanglewood Jazz Festival and the July 4 festivities go on sale the same day.

Lyric gift

The Calderwood Charitable Foundation and the Palace Head Foundation have given a $250,000 challenge grant to the Boston Lyric Opera to support new and existing community outreach and education programs as well as the current season. The BLO has to raise $500,000 by June 30 to collect. New initiatives planned under the grant include two free performances of Donizetti's "The Daughter of the Regiment" at the Strand in Dorchester for public school students and a free course of teachers, along with an expanded student discount program. Right turn for recovery

On Feb. 23, Jimmy Tingle's Off Broadway in Somerville will host a benefit for the Right Turn program of substance abuse and mental health services for artists and entertainers in recovery. Rock E. Museum peace?

I suspect there will be lively discussions online and elsewhere about Charles Pierce's Globe Magazine takeout on the Malcolm Rogers era at the Museum of Fine Arts and the intersection of art, commerce and community. Pierce neatly limns the issues driving museums around the country to blockbuster exhibits such as the MFA's "Things I Love" and "Guitars" - crowd-pleasers that wouldn't have made the grade in an earlier era and earn derision from a sizable corner of the art world. Pierce, never given to following the conventional wisdom, seems sympathetic. Rogers is ever quotable and confident, although he sometimes seems tone-deaf to how he sounds to those of us not making north of 500 large per year.
