The morning papers: Decaying filigree!

The Dresden Dolls' Orpheum show last night seems to have brought out the best in our local rock writers, or at least loosed their descriptive powers. Matthew Shaer's throbbing take is here. "The Dolls knocked out ''Coin Operated Boy" early in the night -- Viglione sent the hit song sprawling, and then, with Palmer in tow, he reeled it slowly back in," he writes. And soon-to-be Globie Sarah Rodman's Herald report is here. She writes of "a coop full of boas," nice, and says "If anyone was made for the decaying filigree and proscenium arch of this place, it’s the Dolls." ... The Huntington wasn't the only theater company to announce its schedule yesterday. The ART unveiled plans that include a collaboration with Dresden Dolls. Way wrong-side-of-the-cultural-tracks for ART, a good start. The Globe also has more deets on the Huntington season. And, for that matter, on the Dolls. There's also a couple of pieces on the 'BCN Rumble finals tonight and the finalists. ... The Herald has a brief rundown on this summer's blockbuster museum exhibits in the area. Lots of good paintings. And there's a bit on Allston band Protokoll.

Huntington announces 25th season

Kate Burton in "The Cherry Orchard," new plays by Theresa Rebeck and Noah Haidle and new productions of August Wilson and David Rabe highlight the 25th anniversary season the Huntington Theatre Company announced today. Wilson's "Radio Golf" opens Sept. 8 at the BU Theatre; Rebeck's "Mauritius" opens Oct. 8 at the Calderwood Pavilion at the BCA; Nicholas Martin directs Burton in Chekhov's play beginning Jan. 5 at the BU; Haidle's "Persephone" opens March 30 at the BCA; and Rabe's "Streamers" opens May 18 at the BU.

Painting Summer at PEM

The Improper Bostonian doesn't put its content online, but I have a short piece in the back of the book if you pick it up, interviewing Trevor Fairbrother, the curator of the new "Painting Summer in New England" exhibit opening this weekend at the Peabody Essex Museum. Don't miss it. It's an absolutely terrific exhibit with more than 100 paintings ranging from Hassam and Sargent to Hopper and all three Wyeths to contemporary artists like Alex Katz and Scott Prior. I've walked through twice now, once when they were still hanging the art, and it's particularly interesting in its mixing of styles, eras and subjects. And yet, if there's something specific and intangible about the New England summer - and I think there is - they've captured it. (Image: Harbor #9 by Alex Katz. WBUR.org offers Peter Walsh's smart take on Diller + Scofidio and the "aberrant architecture" of their new ICA. Best line: "In renderings, the design looks a bit like an especially elegant household appliance -- a coffee maker, perhaps, or a new kind of projection TV." ... Speaking of the Boss' new band, Dan Kennedy links to a video.

Eyes on the Prize

Couple of good music stories in this morning's Globe. This one about a Muslim-American rock band, and this about the new Dresden Dolls album, "Yes Virginia." Best of all, of course, is this page-one story about Boston composer Yehudi Wyner winning the Pulitzer Prize for a work commissioned and premiered by the BSO. ... The Herald has an entertaining interview with the Dolls here.  But Wyner gets two sentences.
