Remember that old Human League song? I've been hearing it in my head a lot lately. But unlike me, a group of Boston-area artists is actually doing something to help the latest mideast disaster zone. Members of the ART, the Boston Camerata, the Boston Philharmonic, Emmanuel Music, Sharq Arab-American Ensemble and more have hooked up a benefit concert for "civilian victims of the conflict between Israel and Lebanon." (Organizers emphasize that the participants are acting on their own, not on behalf of their organizations.)
"This event will be non-sectarian, non-partisan and non-political," insists Boston Camerata director Joel Cohen, one of the event’s organizers. "But it is clear that all of the participants, like so many of us in the public at large, are horrified by this recent violence. We want to do something to help those who suffer from it."
Performers in "theatre,
classical and early music, Arabic, Sephardic-Jewish, and Turkish
styles, as well as American music" will be part of the event set for 8 p.m. on Aug. 7; Ben Zander is probably the biggest name on the list. The event will be held at Emmanuel Church, 15 Newbury St., and is technically free, donations encouraged. The money will go to the International Red Cross.
