Legendary rock superstar John Mellencamp performs with Keith
Lockhart and the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra for the 2007 Boston
Pops Fireworks Spectacular on Wednesday, July 4, at 8:30 p.m. at the
Hatch Memorial Shell on the Charles River Esplanade in Boston. Mr.
Mellencamp - a rock veteran whose recording career spans three decades -
is perhaps best-known for such timeless hits as “Small Town” and
“Jack and Diane.”
This year’s July 4 program features a performance by the
winner of POPSearch, the Boston Pops’ “American Idol”-style
competition that sought talented amateur singers from across the
country. “America’s Orchestra” concludes its ever-popular July 4
concert with the traditional performance of Tchaikovsky’s 1812
Overture, complete with live cannons and the ringing of church bells
across Boston.
Boston’s WBZ-TV will broadcast the Boston Pops July Fourth
concert locally from 8 to 10 p.m. with WBZ-TV anchors Lisa Hughes and
Jack Williams as hosts. At 7 p.m., WBZ-TV anchors Paula Ebben and Scott
Wahle will host a one-hour pre-show, “The American Spirit.” At 10
p.m., the broadcast goes national with host Craig Ferguson, as music
lovers from coast to coast join in the celebration on the CBS Television
Network (10 p.m. ET/delayed PT). This hour-long broadcast culminates
with a fireworks display over the Charles River and will be presented
live and commercial-free by Liberty Mutual Group.
