String Quartet, and The New Cars, as well as a live broadcast of
Minnesota Public Radio’s A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison
Keillor. BSO Music Director James Levine leads Opening Night at
Tanglewood and launches the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Tanglewood
season on Friday, July 6.
The Mark Morris Dance Group performs Purcell’s Dido and
Aeneas with Tanglewood Music Center Vocal Fellows and Orchestra on June
28 and 29 in Ozawa Hall. These 8:30 p.m. performances, conducted by
Stefan Asbury and choreographed by Mark Morris, mark the renowned dance
company’s first Tanglewood appearance since June 2003. This
collaborative, interdisciplinary production also features the costume
designs of Christine van Loon, the scenic designs of Robert Bordo, and
the lighting designs of James F. Ingalls.
Garrison Keillor will host a live broadcast of Minnesota Public
Radio’s A Prairie Home Companion from the Koussevitzky Music Shed on
Saturday, June 30, at 5:45 p.m. The now-annual event has become the
popular radio program’s season finale and a Tanglewood tradition since
A Prairie Home Companion’s first live broadcast here in 1998.
The Emerson String Quartet (Eugene Drucker and Philip Setzer,
violins; Lawrence Dutton, viola; and David Finckel, cello) perform an
all-Beethoven program at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 1, in Ozawa Hall.
The ensemble performs two of Beethoven’s late quartets: No. 15 in A
minor, Op. 132, and No. 13 in B-flat, Op. 130, the latter with its
original finale, the Grosse Fuge.
The New Cars - comprising original members of the successful
and influential new-wave band The Cars as well as legendary glam-rocker
Todd Rundgren - will perform at 7 p.m. on July 4 in the Koussevitzky
Music Shed. The Tanglewood grounds open at 4 p.m., and the concert is
followed by fireworks over the Stockbridge Bowl.
The Juilliard String Quartet (Joel Smirnoff and Ronald Copes,
violins; Samuel Rhodes, viola; and Joel Krosnick, cello) will perform at
8:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 5, in Ozawa Hall. The ensemble’s
all-Bartók program, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Juilliard
String Quartet, includes Quartets nos. 2, 4, and 6. The Juilliard
Quartet made history at Tanglewood on July 10 and 17, 1948, when they
became the first ensemble ever to perform the complete cycle of all six
Bartók string quartets, which they divided between two concerts given in
Tanglewood’s old Theatre-Concert Hall.
