The Massachusetts Cultural Council announced the winners of the 2009 Commonwealth Awards, the state’s highest honors in the arts, humanities and sciences, including the Peabody Essex Museum, Gunther Schuller and Ted Kennedy. The awards will be presented at a State House ceremony Jan. 13 with actress Elizabeth Banks, a Pittsfield native, as keynote speaker. - Creative Economy Catalyst (2): Worcester Cultural Coalition & Peabody Essex Museum, Salem.
- Creative Community: The City of Pittsfield, Mayor James Ruberto
- Individual Achievement: Gunther Schuller, Composer/Conductor
- Cultural Philanthropy (2): Barbara Lee Family Foundation, Cambridge & The Behrakis Foundation, Lexington
- Leadership: Louis Casagrande, Boston Children’s Museum
- Creative Learning (2): Codman Academy Charter Public School, Boston & Thonah Ep, Lynn
