In a political ultimate fighting match that seems to belong to the previous presidency, Bill Maher and Ann Coulter will stage a showdown at the Wang Theater March 10. The event is part of the Citi Performing Arts Center's terribly misnamed “Speaker Series: The Minds That Move The World.” One can only imagine that unsuspecting patrons will run screaming for the exits 10 minutes in. And only part of that is on the loathsome Coulter. Maher's just too damn smarmy, no matter his politics.
I don't know how they fit this attention-whore showdown under the mission statement: The “Speaker Series” is a timely and important series of events that will provide attendees with a unique framework for understanding America’s current political landscape and place in world politics, through the insights of some of the most prominent political figures of our time. I mean, really? This sounds less "timely and important" than "biting the heads off chickens," a carnival freakshow that no sane person would want to see. Al Gore comes in on March 30, fair enough, he fits the bill. But then, on May 27, Charlie Rose will conduct an interview with James Carville and Karl Rove, two more genetic remnants of an era we'd all like to forget just for a little while. But tickets for each event cost $38 to $200. $200!!! Brass balls over there at the City Center, brass balls. Finally on June 9, Soledad O'Brien hosts some sort of network-neutral race-and media panel with Al Sharpton, Lisa Ling and John Quinones. But who are we to deprive you of info: "For tickets and information, please visit www.speakerseries2009.com, www.citicenter.org, the Citi Performing Arts Center Box Office, or call 1-866-348-9738."
