Winners Include John Mayer and Gary Burton
BOSTON, MA, February 9, 2009 — Berklee alumni were honored with eight Grammy Awards on music’s biggest night for their outstanding contributions to some of last year’s top releases. The winners were recognized for their work in varied categories and fields, including pop, rock, rap, jazz, Broadway show music, producing, mixing/engineering, and mastering. With last night’s wins, Berklee alumni have now received a total of 176 Grammy Awards.
John Mayer ‘98, who performed in a tribute to Bo Diddley at the ceremony, won two Grammys - in the categories Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, for “Say,” and Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance, for “Gravity” - bringing him the sixth and seventh awards of his career. In other rock categories, Thomas Pridgen ‘03, of the Mars Volta, won Best Hard Rock Performance for “Wax Simulacra;” and Joe Travers ‘91, of Zappa Plays Zappa, won Best Rock Instrumental Performance for “Peaches en Regalia.”
Andrew Dawson ‘01, who has two previous Grammys for his work with Kanye West, won Best Rap Album for engineering/mixing Lil Wayne’s smash-hit album Tha Carter III. Gavin Lurssen ‘91 took home an Album of the Year award for his work as mastering engineer on Robert Plant and Alison Krauss’s Raising Sand, which was the night’s biggest winner.
Gary Burton ‘62 was awarded the sixth Grammy of his career in the category Best Jazz Instrumental Album for The New Crystal Silence, with Chick Corea. Alex Lacamoire ‘95 won his first award, in the category Best Musical Show Album for In The Heights, a show for which he also won a Tony Award.

TAKE TOP HONORS WITH TWO OF THE NIGHT’S BIGGEST AWARDS
Burlington, MA – Rounder Records is pleased to announce that its artists won seven Grammys® at last night’s 51ST Annual Grammy® Awards ceremony at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Robert Plant and Alison Krauss were awarded the highest honors – Album of the Year for Raising Sand and Record of the Year for “Please Read the Letter.” This makes Rounder only the second independent label in Grammy® history to win in these two categories. The duo also took home awards for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for “Rich Woman” (a category they also won last year for “Gone Gone Gone”), Best Country Collaboration with Vocals for “Killing the Blues,” and Best Contemporary Folk/Americana Album for Raising Sand. The duo also performed tracks “Rich Woman” and “Gone Gone Gone” at last night’s awards with producer, bandleader and fellow Grammy® winner T Bone Burnett along with a stellar cast of musicians including Buddy Miller, Dennis Crouch, and Jay Bellerose.
Krauss, as a solo artist, collaborator, producer, and with Union Station, has 26 Grammy® awards to her credit, the most of any female artist or any country artist. Jimmy Sturr also continues his reign as polka king winning again in the category of Best Polka Album, for Let the Whole World Sing. This makes it 18 Grammy® awards for Sturr and his Orchestra in this category. Banjo great Béla Fleck & the Flecktones also picked up an award for Best Pop Instrumental Album.
