The Boston Lyric Opera unveiled ambitious plans for 2009-10 under General and Artistic Director Esther Nelson today. The four main productions are:
- A new BLO production of Bizet’s Carmen directed by Nicholas Muni and conducted by Keith Lockhart, at the Shubert beginning Nov. 6
- The North American premiere of the Welsh National Opera production of Ariadne auf Naxos, conducted by Erik Nielsen at the Shubert. (The 31-year-old Maestro Nielsen flew in from Germany last summer to conduct Tanglewood’s “Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny” when James Levine was out for surgery.) Begins March 12, 2010.
- A new production by Lillian Groag of Mozart’s Idomeneo, re di Creta (Idomeneo, King of Crete) conducted by David Angus, at the Shubert. Begins April 23.
- A new, non-subscription "Opera Annex" program getting the troupe out of the theater and into a "found space," likely in Feb. 2010. Although the location is TBD, the production is Benjamin Britten's The Turn of the Screw, directed by Sam Helfrich.
Also on the bill is the annual Opera For Young Audiences production next spring, Rossini's The Barber of Seville.
