Morning reading: As the 19th anniversary of the heist at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum approaches next Wednesday, Shelley Murphy updates us on the investigation. It appears they're no closer to finding the missing Rembrandts and other paintings. Pat Nee says Whitey Bulger wasn't involved, but wanted to find the thieves and take the paintings from them, which sounds about right. Also, the statute of limitations on the robbery itself has expired, leaving only charges related to possession of stolen property, which officials say might go away in exchange for a safe return of the paintings.
So, if I was an old thief with a stash of hard-to-unload paintings, I think now would be an excellent time to cut an immunity deal and return the paintings, then sign a million-dollar book contract for the true story of the robbery. Given the state of the journalism business these days, if the Gardner thieves are out there reading HubArts, let me just say that I am very available for ghostwriting gigs.
I just received a copy of the new book "The Gardner Heist," by Ulrich Boser, who'll be speaking at the BPL next week, and I'll try to get some words up about that on Monday or Tuesday.
Also worth a look this morning is Joan Anderman's piece on beer and wine making their way into Club Passim.
