Will McMillan's cabaret performances are always interesting, especially when there's a real world topic at hand. For examples, there's "In Good Company," an economy-themed show he did with his sometime stage partner Bobbi Carrey, and "Will Loves Steve," a set of songs by composers including Sondheim and Wonder that celebrated McMillan's 15-year committed relationship with yet another Steve.
On Saturday night, McMillan and his frequent collaborator, pianist Doug Hammer, will deliver "The Kid Inside," a show about McMillan's internal and external struggles during his high school years. It's a set he first delivered a few years ago for 10th graders in a human sexuality class at his old high school and was later asked back to perform for an alumni reunion.
"(That) time I was performing for my classmates and a bunch of other alumni of all ages who were there for their reunions," McMillan says in notes for the show. "I wondered how some of the older alumni and their wives would respond to songs like 'Taylor, The Latte Boy,' which is about having a crush on a Starbucks barista. But, other than a fire alarm going off halfway through the show, it was very well received. My favorite feedback came from the 10-year-old son of one of my classmates, who told his mom that my performance was one of his favorite parts of the entire weekend."
If that's not enough to make you want to go, you should know that the event is a benefit to help pay for recent work on the Steinert grand piano at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education, where McMillan works. The show is Saturday at 8 at the CCAE, 56 Brattle Street. Tix are $15 ($13 for BACA members). Call 617-547-6789 x1.
