The Newport folk and jazz fests are back in the hands of the legendary George Wein two years after he sold them to something called Festival Network LLC. Globe story is here. The Times story is here, including the tidbit that Wein is among the creditors Festival Network hasn't paid. Of course, the first comment on the Globe story is a snide comment that the '60s are over; the folk festival of course has always been the topic of debate about sticking to its roots versus going pop. In the old days that meant the famous Dylan-goes-electric controversy; last year it was about Festival Network bringing in performers like Jimmy Buffett and the Black Crowes. Given the financial difficulties that, well, every arts organization seems to be having in our current straits, it will be interesting to see which way Wein goes.
