UMass Lowell announced this afternoon that Lowell-area arts patrons Richard and Nancy Donahue, best known as founders of the Merrimack Valley Repertory Theatre, are giving $500,000 through their foundation to endow an arts professorship at the school. “Through the Nancy Donahue Endowed Professorship in the Arts, we will strengthen the music, art and theater programs at UMass Lowell and nurture the artistic passion and talent in students who can take advantage of Lowell’s vast artistic resources,” Chancellor Marty Meehan said.
Music Prof. Kay George Roberts (left) is the first recipient. A faculty member since 1978, Roberts is the founder of the UMass Lowell String Project, which makes classical music accessible in local public schools, music director of the New England Orchestra and principal conductor for Opera North Inc., in Philadelphia. An accomplished violinist, she studied at Tanglewood with Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa.
