This is a blog, so we can just say it: That sucks.
"The Boston Pops will showcase some of the most talented young musicians from the Boston Public School System when the winners of the Fidelity Investments® FutureStage competition are featured at tonight’s 8 p.m. Boston Pops concert at Symphony Hall, under the direction of Keith Lockhart," said the email from the BSO. But "featured" is a carefully chosen word there. Boston Latin has been closed for the next week because of what the Globe calls "a suspected outbreak of swine flu," complete with one confirmed case. So the winners from that school will be performing on video, having been taped at an undisclosed location the Community Music Center of Boston earlier today, so there's less chance of them spreading any germs.
The students who unfortunately must miss their Symphony Hall debut are Chris Middleton, 17, of Dorchester, a pianist and singer who will perform his own pop ballad, "Can’t be Gone Long," and the Grieg Quartet (B. Kim, Boston, 15, violin; Tadesh Inagaki, Jamaica Plain, 17, violin; Allyn Hayes McCourt, Jamaica Plain, 17, viola; and Christopher Nguyen, Roslindale, 17, cello) performing Edvard Grieg’s String Quartet No. 1 in G Minor. I hope the Pops can give them another shot at it, someday. (I'm told the kids at least got to do an earlier rehearsal with Lockhart and the band.)
The complete release, with the other winners, is after the jump.

The Boston Pops will showcase some of the most talented young musicians from the Boston Public School System when the winners of the Fidelity Investments® FutureStage competition are featured at tonight’s 8 p.m. Boston Pops concert at Symphony Hall, under the direction of Keith Lockhart. The student performances will start at approximately 8:45 p.m. In addition, 15 steppers and a 20-voice chorus from the Edwards Middle School will perform outside Symphony Hall, prior to the evening’s concert, from 6-7:45 p.m.
Performing with the Pops on the stage of Symphony Hall will be competition winners AnJalique Perry (Dorchester), a 17 year-old soprano from Roland Hayes School of Music, performing Miss Celie’s Blues from the movie The Color Purple and The Underground Trio (Chris Juris, Boston, 18 year-old senior guitarist; Gustavo Hernadez, Roslindale, 17 year-old junior percussionist; Max Ridley, Jamaica Plain, 15 year-old sophomore bassist) from the Boston Arts Academy. They’ll be performing Windows by Chick Corea.
Due to the temporary school closings, winners from the Boston Latin School will perform with the Pops via a video feed. Competition winners from Boston Latin are Chris Middleton (Dorchester), a 17 year-old pianist & vocalist who will perform his own pop ballad, Can’t be Gone Long, and the Grieg Quartet (B. Kim, Boston, 15 year-old freshman violinist; Tadesh Inagaki, Jamaica Plain, 17 year-old junior violinist; Allyn Hayes McCourt, Jamaica Plain, 17 year-old junior violist; Christopher Nguyen, Roslindale, 17 year-old junior cellist) performing Edvard Grieg’s String Quartet No. 1 in G Minor.
Fidelity FutureStage, an arts education initiative for Boston Public School student musicians, was created to provide middle and high school students with unique experiences in the arts, including opportunities to learn from leading musicians and to showcase their own talents.
