UPDATE UPDATE: Make one Joe Spaulding joke and they get right back to you. A Citi spokesperson emails this: "The gift is a multi-year unrestricted gift that will be used for projects that
benefit and support the Wang Theatre. Projects the gift could be used for
include fixing the Wang marquee, expanding the Center’s existing and
continuing technology initiatives and 'Going Green' in the theatre
with LED lighting."
UPDATE: It's been 24 hours and still no response to my question about what they're going to do with the money. Presumably the words "Joe Spaulding" and "bonus" aren't involved, but you never know...
I've sent an email asking what they're going to do with the money, but for now here's the news: The Wang Foundation has given a $1 million gift to the Citi Performing Arts Center, home of the Wang Theatre and other venues. Wang Foundation spokesman and Citi Performing Arts Center board member Courtney S. Wang said, “We are acutely aware of the recession and its effects on the arts, and especially on operations such as the Wang Theatre. We hope that this act of friendship makes a significant difference and speaks loudly of the commitment of the Wang Foundation and the Wang family to the institution and the Wang Theatre’s long-term success.”
Needless to say, the Citi Center folks are grateful: “While there is no question that these are challenging times for the arts, we are optimistic about the future and extremely grateful to the Wang Foundation for recognizing our vision, passion and commitment to continue expanding access to broad-based popular entertainment and the performing arts,” said Scott Sperling, Chairman of the Board of Directors.
In other Citi Center/economic news, the collective buying/discount site Groupon Boston is offering $68 tickets to the upcoming production of "The Color Purple" at the Wang Theatre for only $35, today only.
