The 32nd year of the John Coltrane Memorial Concerts in Boston, called "The Believer," will take place Sept. 26 and 27 at Northeastern and at Hibernian Hall in Roxbury. The inspiration is drawn from Coltrane’s early solo album entitled “The Believer,” but also reflects his faith in his musical quest and the possibility of a better day for all.
On Sept. 26 at 8 p.m. at Northeastern's Blackman Theatre, "The Believer: Concert 1" will feature the 14-member John Coltrane Memorial Ensemble performing their contemporary interpretations of Coltrane tunes; the concert is given in honor of "one of Boston's greatest heroes of the creative arts," Edmund Barry Gaither, Executive Director of the National Center of Afro-American Artists and Museum. "The Believer: Concert 2" showcases ensemble member Stan Strickland (sax/flute) with his own group and appearances by members of The John Coltrane Memorial Ensemble at 3 p.m. on Sept. 27 at Hibernian Hall. Eric Jackson hosts both shows.
The event also includes the “Ascension” art installation of jazz- and other music-inspired work by the artists of the African American Master Artists in Residence Program (AAMARP) at Northeastern. The JCMC operates under the auspices of the Department of African American Studies at Northeastern. The free exhibit is on display in the Ryder Hall Atrium Sept. 1-28. Tickets for the two concerts are $20 for the general public at 617-373-4700 or www.gonu.com/tickets.
