Keith Lockhart and singer-songwriter Ben Folds have selected "indie-folk-Americana" band Family of the Year as the opening act for Ben Folds’ upcoming performance with the Boston Pops on Oct. 2. Partnering with music site Sonicbids.com, Folds and the Pops selected Family of the Year from over 650 auditions submitted online. Thee band's music mixes male and female singers over a bright acoustic pop sound; you'll think She & Him, Fleet Foxes and James Taylor. In fact, they cover Taylor's "Shower the People."
The band comprises four guys, three of them with roots in the Martha's Vineyard rock band Unbusted and two women from Orange County, CA., one of whom lists a bunch of film credits. Trying to find out where they all came together, but their MySpace lists them as based in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Silver Lake. Their EP "Where's The Sun" comes out Sept. 22. (Unbusted did play in the Symphony Hall lobbies before the Pops' performances with My Morning Jacket in 2006.) Family of the Year will play for a half-hour in Symphony Hall beginning at 7:15, with the Pops/Folds performance at 8.
