Gov. Patrick gives dad's jazz archive to Berklee

Gov. Deval Patrick and his family will honor his late father, the jazz musician, composer and arranger Laurdine Kenneth “Pat" Patrick," by donating his "vast collection" of scores, photographs, personal materials, and recordings to Berklee College of Music. The historical Pat Patrick Collection will be donated to Berklee's Africana Studies Archive at a private ceremony next week. Saxophonist Pat Patrick (Nov. 23, 1929 - Dec. 31, 1991) was best known for his 40-year association with Sun Ra and his Arkestra, and also played with Mongo Santamaria, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk. He was estranged from his son for long periods, but a 2007 Globe article detailing their relationship said that they had found "a certain peace" by his death. The collection includes original scores, lead sheets and arrangements by Patrick, Ellington and Santamaria, hundreds of photographs, and personal writings detailing his struggles and beliefs.
