I've been skeptical all along about the prospects for a revival of Beverly's North Shore Music Theatre, but new owner Bill Hanney announced a season schedule that looks like the real deal. The dates: "Gypsy," July 6 - 25; "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Aug. 3-22; "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," Sept. 21-Oct. 10; and "A Chorus Line," Nov. 2-21. Maybe the best sign is that former artistic director Jon Kimbell will be back at the helm for the theater's formerly annual holiday spectacular, "A Christmas Carol," Dec. 3-23. The departure of Kimbell a few years ago - and the subsequent end to "Carol" under the new regime - was marked by many as at least the symbolic start of the theater's problems, which were aggravated by a fire and a down economy. Celebrity concerts and children's programming for the season will be announced later.
Now here's the deal if you want to support NSMT: Subscription packages for the regular shows go on sale today, with tix for all four musicals running $126-$234 per seat. And a nice touch: "Former subscribers who had seats in 2008 can reclaim their seating location by contacting the Box Office before March 31." Call (978) 232-7200 or click here: www.nsmt.org. Single-ticket sales begin May 1.
