I disagree with the idea that it's a big secret Mass MoCA was on shaky footing for much of its first decade. We have family in North Adams, so we get there more often than most folks from the eastern part of Mass. (How many of you went to the Patti Smith concert outdoors in the courtyard on a Sunday @2002? I thought so.) For most of the last decade, if you dropped by Mass MoCA in the winter or pretty much anytime but a summer weekend, well, let's just say you weren't going to have any trouble finding a parking place. Building a contemporary art museum in a rundown mill town in the remotest corner of the state seemed, no surprise, a pretty chancy enterprise. But in Sunday's Globe, Geoff Edgers had an excellent takeout limning just how close to the edge things were behind the scenes, and why MoCA is on better financial footing now. ... Sarah's review of the Leonard Cohen show Friday night (scroll down for mine). ... Martin's Musings compares and contrasts two nights of Dave Matthews at Fenway Park, complete with video of "Dirty Water." ... In Sunday's North section, I had a piece on Salem's Paula Morin, returning to the mic after 40 years, and Malden's Ablevision. (Pic: My shot from Sol LeWitt building at MoCA.)
