Mission of Burma in the '00s is a heartening story of a band reunion that doesn't suck. (Pavement fans, keep your fingers crossed.) With another album coming out soon, the band has scheduled a free outdoor show at MIT on Oct. 4. On The Download has all the details. And for anyone who wasn't around in the '80s to see them, or hasn't checked out the band lately, this pretty much awesome performance of "Academy Fight Song" from last year will clue you in:
Wow, I never thought I'd live to see the day that Mission of Burma was featured on the front page of a major website (it was on my Yahoo! homepage). I'm glad the band is getting the recognition it justly deserves. Their last two albums following their reunion (OnOffOn and The Obliterati) are stomping -- it's like their 15-20 year hiatus just distilled the energy, dynamism and intensity of their avant-garde brand of indie rock. Talk about Saturn devouring its children -- their essential message to all alternative and indie rock bands of today is "You've been erased."
