It's another one of those words + music events that are intermittently the rage around here. And it's enough of a draw that a second show has been added. "Another Bullshit Night In Suck City" author Nick Flynn will be reading from his new book, "The Ticking Is The Bomb," at Berklee's Cafe 939 on Jan. 20. At the 7 p.m. show he'll be joined by Eric Martin (of the Neats and Illyrians) and Drew O’Doherty, who'll perform; at the just-added 9:30 show, the music will be provided by Bill Janovitz and Chris Colbourn of Buffalo Tom, as well as Franc Graham. And here's the killer: it's $5. Yup. Call 617-923-8487 or visit www.berklee.edu/events. Cafe 939 is at 939 Boylston.
Scituate native Flynn has a variety of credits, but most folks know him for "Suck City," which details his years working at Pine Street Inn and his relationship with his down-and-out father. "The Ticking" is another memoir, which documents - and I'm still having trouble putting all this together in my mind - both his wait for the birth of his daughter and his growing outrage and obsession with torture committed at Abu Ghraib and elsewhere, which eventually led him to the Middle East. The guy is nothing if not committed.
