As you may know, HubArts World Headquarters is in Newburyport and we pay special attention to the museums of the North Shore. The big news among them this year, hands down, will be the reopening of the renovated and modernized Cape Ann Museum, now set for Aug. 19. As our friend Keith Powers puts it, the Cape Ann is "Home to the greatest collection of Fitz Henry Lane paintings and drawings in the world, and the most sophisticated repository of the history of Cape Ann," so it's a big deal. The other big story around here is the ongoing development of the Peabody Essex Museum into a standalone art museum, vastly broadening its onetime mission to present the maritime history of the North Shore and the global trade and cultural exchanges that arose from it. On Sept. 6, the PEM will open a run as the only East Coast venue for Calder and Abstraction: From Avant-Garde to Iconic, organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and in collaboration with the Calder Foundation. The exhibit of the iconic - a word not misused here - 20th century sculptor's mobiles, stabiles and maquettes - runs through Jan. 4.
